We
know how excited you must be! If you are coming to pick up your new puppy, please
visit here
first. Then return and read on. You can also purchase your
puppy supplies using our link to PetSmart lower on this page! Thanks!
Be prepared when you pick up your
pup, to spend several hours with us, either at the "Puppy
Party" sharing your joy with others who have pups in the same and
previous litters, or one-on-one with us to discuss any questions you
or we may have. If your pup is being shipped, we can schedule a
conference time for you prior to and just following the arrival of
your furry bundle of joy (feel free to email a date and time for this).
We will
supply you with a sample of the food which he/she is accustomed to,
and a brochure explaining the food we chose and how to feed it. We
recommend a high quality, dry kibble made by Eukaneuba/Iams (You can also
visit Petsmart using the link below to purchase your food at a
discount delivered right to your door).
Additionally,
you will get: a written contract, a vaccination and worming schedule,
and (once your pup is paid for) the AKC registration slip, which you will fill
out and return to the AKC in order to "register" your pup.
We recommend that you make a copy of the registration slip before you send it
off to the AKC. These forms are very difficult to replace. You have a year
from the date of issue to send it in without additional costs levied
by the AKC.
You
should have a crate
(go here for tips) suited to his size for transportation from our
home, toenail clippers - the scissor kind, NOT the guillotine
kind you get at the grocery store, a large bag of dog food with a trash
can to store it in, and a raised food and water bowl arrangement, that
can grow with your pup. You will also need a leash and collar. The
flat nylon or leather quick release buckle type works best with young
pups, and now there are some very strong ones
made from rappelling rope. We don't recommend a choke until 6 months.
And then only with supervision. We also recommend a pooper scooper,
lots of Rottie books, and a folding gate to block your puppy in an
uncarpeted room, while potty training. (Not the bathroom)
You
should also have a few squeak toys, and a ball or two. Tennis balls are OK
for young pups, but use caution when the pup gets big enough to
swallow it, and ALWAYS supervise play as a slimy tennis ball is almost
impossible to remove from a dog's throat! You can also have a Nylabone,
or cheese stuffed cow toes, puppy shampoo and LOTS of TIME to play with your new pup!
Would you like to know why pups are better than boyfriends? Go HERE.
Please
have your veterinarian chosen BEFORE you bring your pup home. Make
sure you feel comfortable with him or her and that they are
comfortable with Rottweilers. No not everyone loves your pup like you
do! Please plan on having the vet see your pup within 2 working days
of taking him home, and take a stool sample and his vaccination
records and a stool sample with you when you go. Your pup will be current on his
vaccinations when he leaves our home, but you MUST keep his
vaccinations and heart worm medication current once he is living with
you. Please keep your pup away from other pups and adult dogs that you
don't know, until he is 4 weeks past his last vaccination at 20 weeks.
By then he will be ready to begin "Puppy Kindergarten" for
the socialization necessary to a develop well rounded Rottie
personality, and continue the foundation we have begun. Continue to be
vigilant with other dogs so he doesn't inadvertently get bitten by
someone's over aggressive dog (he will remember it for LIFE!). The developmental years are a dangerous
time for that to happen to a young canine mind. Not to
mention your nerves!

Shampoo
Options For Your Puppy
Tearless puppy shampoos
Oatmeal shampoos
- Used to treat itchy skin, allergies, or for dogs who stay inside the
heated/air conditioned home.
Medicated shampoos
- Used for conditions such as seborrhea and allergies caused by flea
bites, grass and pollen.
Botanical extract shampoos
- Made of all natural ingredients, these products are milder. They
don't later as well, however.
Flea and tick shampoos
- Available in chemically based or all natural formulas. Follow
the
directions carefully. Some contain heavy-duty pesticides and cannot be
used too frequently or in combination with other products. Natural
flea and tick shampoos are safer, yet less effective, and you still
must follow instructions. I use Murphy's Oil Soap, which is vegetable
oil based, is non irritating to the dogs eyes, and also oils the coat.
Murphy's Oil soap has no residual effect on fleas, but kills what is
on the dog at the time of bathing. I also use Sentinel
heartworm
preventative (with Program in it) during the summer months and
Frontline Top Spot or Advantage
to keep my dogs flea free. J
Color-enhancing shampoos
- Available for white, black and red dogs. These can be used each time
you bathe your dog, and they can be used on show dogs. Show dogs
should be bathed more than 2 days prior to a show, or that morning, as
the Rottie coat tends to get "fluffy" within 12 to 48 hours
of bathing.

De-Skunking Solution
Crossing the path of a skunk can
leave your dog smelling like the cartoon character Pe-Pe Le Pew. To
help alleviate the irritating, powerful odor, Karyl Brandon, and
animal-Science technician at Kansas State University's College of
Veterinary Medicine, offers a homemade formula to de-skunk your
companion, should you ever need to.
Brandon has tried several experiments
to remove the skunk smell from sprayed animals. As a grooming expert,
she says many of the common antidotes people try, including tomato
juice, vinegar and different types of shampoos may not do the job.
She recommends an easy
"recipe" using ingredients that can be found in most
drugstores:
- 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
- 1/4 cup baking soda (sodium
bicarbonate)
- 1 teaspoon liquid soap
Brandon advises beginning by wetting
your pet down, then applying the mixture and working through the
animals' hair. Leave the solution on for three to four minutes, and
finish by rinsing with tap water. Make only as much de-skunking remedy
as you can use at one time. It is unsafe to bottle the chemical
combination. (Kansas State University News Service)
